UNIT (Big Finish Audio Drama) Review
An interesting listen although I'm not sure that it succeeds at its goal of being the sci-fi of Doctor Who without the aliens, albeit they do show up from time to time but just not in the way you'd expect.
The idea of using The Brigadier as a bridge between the old and new Unit comes off as a cool idea, and when he's the centre of a scene the late Nicholas Courtney not only delivered a great performance but he had the ability to be this series' Doctor by using his experience to lead the team.
This, unfortunately, isn't the case and instead, he's reserved for mere commentary in some episodes.
Having Unit focus on terrorist plots isn't an inherently bad concept, and it's not executed poorly for what they've done however, this show feels like the in-between bits when Doctor Who is happening around these episodes. Like choosing to focus on the daily routine of a character rather than the interesting exploits they participate in.
A lot of this is just character's discussing incidents rather than doing anything and I know that sounds like a ridiculous complaint however I've just listened to 38 episodes of Doctor Who that prove you can show and not tell in these audio dramas.
One taster episode and four full-length episodes make this slightly more bearable than I'd thought so I do recommend this based off the cast and the show's concepts. Just be prepared for a bit of fodder here and there!
