Time Lord Victorious: Mutually Assured Destruction Review
The Eighth Doctor... dancing... with a Dalek... in zero gravity....
Yeah I had fun with this one.
Acting as an epilogue to All Is Flesh and as a sequel to The Enemy Of My Enemy, Mutually Assured Destruction shows us a more gleeful than usual Eighth Doctor escaping a Dalek ship in the midst of blowing up. It was nice to hear a Doctor just having fun with the situation he’s in. I haven’t heard Stranded yet but the Eighth Doctor has been through a lot of doom and gloom of late, that goes for Nine and Ten as well I guess, so to have a nice simple fun tale of the Doctor skipping about a Dalek ship felt like the right move.
The downside to doing this is that it’s trying to wrap up the last Eighth Doctor story, which wasn’t a particularly jolly one.
Thankfully there’s enough banter between Paul McGann and Nicholas Briggs to make up for the small short comings of this adventure.
As a finale to the Daleks story in the Dark Times, for now at least, it’s adequate. Each Dalek serve the same roles as last time which is fine enough for me. Excellent variations on the traditional villains and a million times better than their own spin-off material.
I also appreciated the Dalek vs Dalek interactions including the nice foreshadowing to the Doctor’s future towards the end.
With all of that being said, this was definitely worth a listen. A great epilogue for the Eighth Doctor in the Dark Times but be aware it is dependent upon knowledge of previous entries beforehand.
8/10
