The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Ravenous 1 Review

You know you don’t have to have a quota of episodes right? For the last few Eighth Doctor stories the first episodes of each set have always seemed redundant regardless of quality. One filler episode followed by three story filled ones.

With Ravenous 1 it’s almost a joke at this point.

Their Finest Hour has the Doctor answer a call from Churchill which diverts his and Liv’s urgent mission. The question I would then ask is if the episode held a good enough standard.

It features the Doctor and Liv in airplanes for literally close to 20ish minutes.

The episode’s “we can’t save everyone” motif falls flat when the Doctor does just that by the end of this first set.

The second episode, How To Make a Killing in Time Travel, has the team make a pit stop because “the vortex isn’t quite right”. An excuse to have a few filler episodes is fine but these aren’t even good ones when the end goal of their mission is to save a companion the Doctor literally referred to as his best friend in the previous arc.

Sure you could argue these things just happen and they’re significant enough to stop the Doctor for a bit although the writers and producers decided to make a seemingly urgent journey irrelevant for two episodes.

I will says besides from a few hiccups in these episodes everything is still on point even if it feels like the journey is way too long this time.

The final two episodes for bring the narrative back into focus and whilst they’re written and acted well I can’t say I’m a fan of the premise or the direction certain characters take.
