Star Wars Episode Six: Return Of The Jedi Review

My experience on this film has always been weird. I love it but I know it has flaws.

For every exploration of the Dark Side there’s and Ewok acting as merchandise. For every cool space battle there’s a Teddy Bear Brigade of sticks and stones assaulting armoured Imperial Walkers.

At first I thought “really?” and then I found myself having fun with it.

Sure, this is the first Star Wars film in the Original Trilogy to feel like choices were made to sell more toys but at least it doesn’t feel too blatant like the Porgs we’ll see in a future entry. The Porgs don’t front an assault on the Empire, put it that way.

With that being said this is still a great film.

Luke’s first in person appearance is amazing.

Yoda’s passing is perfect with his last lines being the answer to a question many had after his initial appearance in the previous film.

The Speeder Chase scene is nothing but intense.

The fight for Death Star II is great, if a little repetitive.

And finally, the confrontation between Luke, Darth Vader and the Emperor is god damn beautiful!

This is one of those rare circumstances where I think that a movie’s flaws are more than present but they don’t stop this film from being a great time.

Sure the first act presents us with a few goofs and questions, like why it took Luke so long to rescue Han, but they’re largely forgotten by the second and third acts... just bypass the teddy bears.

7.5/10
